Hindi film Review

Film: Karar- The Deal: A not-so-decent enterprise
Cast:  Mahek, Tarun , Jyoti and Shashi Vaidya
Director: Sabir

Rating: *  *

Karar- The Deal is a small but intriguing attempt. The plot is borrowed from the Matt Dillon starrer ‘Wild things’ with some desi ingredients thrown-in to fool the plagiarism police. There are some interesting ingredients too, designed  to whet your appetite. Two beautiful leading ladies willing to shed their clothes at the drop of a hat and some inveigling old hits remixed( and that was legally done) and inventively choreographed. It’s an interesting method for compiling a cinema.

The treatment though is nothing new. Heavy doses of heavy petting, compromising positions and wet dances by both the heroines raise the temperatures by a bit. The locations(UK, South Africa) are visually appealing. Producer Shashi Vaidya assays the role of the wheel-chair bound heart patient referred lovingly as Dadaji, with a fair bit of aplomb.. Jyoti Rana as the nurse Annie who is caught between her lover Dr Aryan and his new wife, Nikita(Mahek), makes her skin-titillating presence felt. Mahek is bankable enough but the plotting is a little too slip-shod. The unaccomplished dialogue delivery and poor performance of the lead actor Tarun who  plays the role of Dr Aryan Vaid, does put a dampener on your excitement though.  Forget the lascivious intent and focus on the song and dance. That’s the only way out of this cold, hard place!

Picks and Piques/Snippet Film Reviews/21Feb2014/Johnson Thomas

Picks and Piques/Snippet Film Reviews/21Feb2014/Johnson Thomas

Highway(Hindi):Rating: * * ½ A Nat-geo styled road trip with Spell-binding cinematography encompassing virgin vistas of the west and north, a few brilliant moments and rustic folksy music strung together by a wonky, untenable ,flimsy plotline.
Dee Saturday Night(Hindi) :Rating: * ½ Aiming for the moral high-ground but actually immersed in sin wrapped in a warped ideology
Darr@The Mall(Hindi) :Rating: *  *  Thin on scares and storyline, resplendent in generic clichés. Don’t expect any Darr at this maul!
Karar-The Deal(Hindi): Rating: *  * It could have been  a sexy, sensuous serenade through UK and South Africa with remix versions of universal’s acclaimed hits setting the rhythm. But this unacknowledged remake of ‘Wild things’ gets away with sex, sleaze and mayhem because of it’s two lusty leading ladies Jyoti Rana and Mahek. It’s as exploitative as they come!
The Monuments Men(English) : Rating: *  *  *  A mammoth Art heist during the second world war that helped assuage the feelings of those affected by war. It’s basically history in a film-not exciting but nevertheless worthy!

Gulabi engaging!Gang(Documentary) Rating: *  *  *  1/2 Stunning, stinging and heartfelt. This documentary in Hindi, about Sampat Pal’s crusade along with her pink brigade,  to put an end to violence and injustice against women is both revealing and immensely engrossing!

Pompeii (English/3D) Rating: *  *  Paul W Anderson’s corny 3D adventure set against the volcanic destruction of the Roman city in 79AD does not have the were-withal to strike it rich
