English film Review
Johnson Thomas
Sci-fi Mumbo Jumbo
Film: Lucy
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min0Sik, Analeigh Tipton, Amr Waked
Director: Luc Besson

Rating: * * ½

Luc Besson's "Lucy,"  is about an American woman who gets kidnapped into service as a drug mule bearing an experimental synthetic hormone. She accidentally absorbs some of it, then sheds her physical, intellectual and even perceptual limitations while going where no human being has ever gone. She achieves 100 % of her brain capacity and capability and eventually self-destructs. And while in that process, there’s a drug lord after her, who she has to destroy.  So because she has this unique power she becomes super human all of a sudden.

That’s all very well. The first 20 odd minutes of Lucy is a humdinger. There’s a strong build-up of tension and engagement with doomsday theories being sprung and actual events being played out. The intercutting till that point allows for a strong build-up but once Lucy gets into the act of wreaking havoc on he captors and more mumbo-jumbo is fed through seminars and lectures involving the Professor, the momentum is lost and with additional graphic imagery of  nature and environment and the effect of capacity overloads, the narrative gets heavier –so much that you just end up being comatosed by what transpires thereafter. Thus, what could have been a brilliant thriller, lost it’s way due to a capacity overload that was designed for a human with fully active 100%  brain – not poor us who just have 20% to work on!
Scarlett Johansson aptly conveys the right emotions  but since the character was so thinly drawn you never get involved completely. So the thrills are pieceleal and the enjoyment is very limited.

#Lateef:TheKingOfCrime(Hindi) Rating: * * Doesn’t live-up to the expectations incurred from such a lofty moniker! About a crime lord from #Ahmedabad who was revered as a desi #RobinHood by his community, this one is a little too lackluster to be deemed interesting! #KewalKrishna #ShariqueMinhaj #HameedKhan #BhartiSharma #AryanVaid #RajuMavani #AdityaLakhiya #MushtaqKhan

#Lucy(English) Rating: * *1/2  #LucBesson’s Sci-fi thriller top-lining #ScarlettJohansson  is a little too theoretical to be viable as an exciting post-modern thriller. #Hercules(English) Rating: * * ½ #BrettRatner,  familiar to #Indians as the man who couldn’t make #HrithikRoshan’s #Kites fly, directs this  #RadicalComics graphic novel adaptation which plays out as a sacrilegious depiction of a familiar legend. With #Dwayne-too-Hawaiian-looking-to-pass-off-as-Greek-Johnson essaying the eponymous role, the film swings drastically away from authenticity to make it just another battle-hungry enterprise! All action, no soul here! #Viacom18  #AartiJadhav #Paramount #Metro-Goldwyn-MayerPictures #JankiPatel
#22JumpStreet(English) Rating: * *  Asinine bumbling-tricks, The sensibility in this redux-masquerading-as-sequel is too radically American to seem as funny to the rest of the world. Slap-shtick, physical and verbal comedy without the timing or the fluidity to make it enjoyable! #ChanningTatum #JonahHill #Phil Lord #Christopher Miller #SonyPictures #AnjaliMalhotra

#PoshterBoyz(Marathi) Rating: * * * Vicarious thrills emanate from a scenario of three men of varying ages belonging to one small village inadvertently becoming the face of Vasectomy promoted by the Govt. health department- Leading-up to howlarious complications. #ShreyasTalpade’s maiden Marathi production tickles the funny bone consistently, with smart timing, sharp scripting and entertaining performances! #SameerPatil #DilipPrabhavalkar #HrishikeshJoshi #AniketVishwasrao  #PoojaSawant #NehaJoshi

#Samarthya(Marathi) Rating: * * Nobly intended but the requisite clarity is missing! About female foeticide, the narrative is a little too jumbled-up to be hard-hitting! #SwayambhooProductions
