This romantic drama is adapted from the novel by Mark helprin and centres on the relationship between a thief and a dying woman. And It’s Big Time Hollywood producer/screenwriter Akiva Goldsman’s premier directorial effort. As a valentine’s day release, this one isn’t the least bit engaging- just too soapy and unconvincing.
Mark Helprin’s 800 odd page novel published in 1983, has been a remarkable read over time but Akiva Goldsman just doesn’t manage to capture the essence of it. Instead he hatches a plot that is so farcical that it could have been laughable-had it not been so tedious. With a brazenly illogical premise centering it, The first half is a rehash of love story and the second is 98 years later with the hero right in the middle at the same age he was in the first half. That takes some adjustment. The material itself is far-fetched, a romantic flight of fancy and fantasy that goes way beyond what could be palatable.
Goldsman’s approach is sincere but solemn and unbecoming. There is no sly humor to lighten-us-up and despite the grand star cast, there’s very little to hold on to. The film is convoluted and hard to follow for viewers unfamiliar with Helprin’s novel. Director/screenwriter Akiva Goldsman seems to have no sense of pacing and loses steam quickly in the narration. So there;s really no great moment in the film. Nothing memorable about this!
