Film review Heartless: All heart no soul!

Cast: Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Ariana Ayam, Deepti Naval and Om Puri
Direction: Shekhar Suman

Rating: *  *

Adhyayan’s third Bollywood film , this time directed by his father Shekar Suman, is a bad copy of the  Hollywood supernatural/Thriller film ‘Awake’ starring Jessica Alba. As far as the story goes, there are interesting twists and inherent thrills but the plotting is just not up to the demands of such a story. A billionaire suffering from a rare heart disease opts for a transplant. But there is something sinister happening behind the scenes and what the patient gets is not what he originally opted for.
Shekar Suman, the first time helmer, is so indulgent towards his lead-actor-son that he overwhelms the narrative with romance and songs which the film could have done better without. As a result there’s not much tension and so the thrills just don’t seem like thrills. The twists and turns in the screenplay also remain unexciting. The story is not typically Bollywood, but the effect is. The performances are all heavy laden. There’s not much room for rapier wit or exciting, riveting drama. The treatment is severely lacking in smarts. Just goes to show that even a bad Hollywood flick can look good when compared to it’s re-envisioned Bollywood take!

Picks and Piques/Snippet Film Reviews 7thFeb2014/Johnson Thomas
Hasee toh Phasee(Hindi) Rating: *  *  * A spirited though disjointed rom-com that sparkles mainly because of it’s leads, their chemistry and some wild set-ups!
Babloo Happy Hai(Hindi) Rating: *  *  ½ Almost there but not quite- this message movie by the ‘I am Kalam’ director has it’s heart in the right place but fails to make it’s triangular love angle convincing. Way too ambitious storyline also makes the going difficult.

Heartless)Hindi) Rating: *  * Debut making Director Shekhar Suman’s labor of love intended to keep his son, Adhyaman’s fledgling film career going, is not without heart. But the lack of rapier wit and intelligence in plotting does make it difficult to endure.

Ya Rab(Hindi) Rating: *  * ½ good intentions don’t always make for a great movie experience. After experiencing ‘Khuda kay Liye’ and ‘Bol’ from across the border, this overly ambitious anti-terrorism film attempts to give a much maligned community a much more humane face. But the stridency in dialogues, loudness of delivery  and protracted nature of the screenplay makes it less than riveting.

Rock, Paper, Dice , Enter(English):Rating: * ½ A Canadian effort shored up by PIO’s , this one is an overly verbose mystery thriller that has more words than action or drama driving it!

Lone Survivor(English) Rating: *  *  *1/2 . As real as it gets. A scorching, brutal account of a military mission caught unawares in Afghanistan.

Saving, Mr Banks(English) Rating: *  *  * ½ Disney’s entertaining recant of the making of ‘Mary Poppins’ that lifted the company into the realm of live-action family entertainment.

The Lego Movie(Animation/English3D) Rating: *  *  * Lego toys are not legends in India as they are in the US so this decent cutely animated 3D entertainer is not likely to enthuse the lay audience. Best suited to the under 10’s.
